about

Sergio Verdinelli is one of the hardest working and most talented drummers/composers in Argentina in both modern jazz and ‘rock national’ worlds.

His discography spans far and wide. His first appearance on ‘ears&eyes Records’, was 2018’s release with leader Juan Bayon, ‘Vidas Simples’ which received awesome reviews including in-print in DownBeat. He’s played and/or recorded with North Americans such as Tim Berne, Tony Malaby, John Hebert, Wayne Krantz, Michael Formanek, Ralph Alessi, Mark Helias, Aaron Goldberg, among others. He’s included on Guillermo Klein’s 2012 “Live at the Village Vanguard” featuring Liliana Herrero with Ben Monder, Bill McHenry, Matias Mendez, and Richard Nant.

In addition, his personal stamp on the world of Argentine rock has been impressive. He’s played, recorded, and toured with one of the most influential rock musicians of the last 20 years, Luis Alberto ‘El Flaco’ Spinetta, one of the founders of “Argentine rock”. Starting in 2005 and since his death in 2012, Verdinelli played an important role in Spinetta’s sound and can be heard on the albums, “Pan”, “Un Mañana” and “Bandas Eternas” (CD/DVD). He can also be heard on two of Fito Paez’s records, both of which were nominated for Grammy Latino for Best Latino Rock record (aside from that Paez has won six Latin Grammys).

Verdinelli’s first professional experience was playing with hip-hop group Illya Kuriaky and the Valderramas, who in 1995 Rolling Stone-Argentina named it one of the best rock albums of the year. Verdinelli performed and recorded with them from 1990 to 2002 with a reunion release on Sony, “Chances” in 2012. At the Latin Grammy Awards of 2013, "Ula Ula" won
"Best Urban Song". In 1993, Verdinelli toured all of Argentina with Argentine rocker Juan Carlos Baglietto to audiences of 15-20,000.

When he started playing jazz professionally around 1994, he shared the stage with some of the most then (and now) most important and influential players in the city including Ernesto Jodos, Juan Cruz de Urquiza, Guillermo Klein, Luis Nacht, Hernan Merlo, Enrique Norris, among others. Currently, he can be heard sharing the stage and studio with folks like Mariano Otero and Esperanza Spaulding’s regular pianist (2006-2012), Argentine Leo Genovese. Last year saw him on tour in Japan with “space” guitarist/noise-ist Yoshitake EXPE.

On this current release, coming out on June 12th on ears&eyes Records AND Argentine label Twitin Records, this piano trio record includes Ernesto Jodos (piano) and Mauricio Dawid (bass). Coming in as drummer AND composer, Verdinelli gives us insight into a delightfully dark reflection on what his scene and look on Argentine jazz is and where it is going. For fans of E.S.T., the calmer side of The Bad Plus would dig this.

To connect the world of rock and jazz even further is that the owner/director of Twitin’ Records is Tweety Gonzalez, whose resume runs deep; he was the keyboard player for what’s probably the most famous Argentine rock band, Soda Stereo. Tweety has produced music for Shakira and worked with Gustavo Cerati on Ahí vamos, an album that won two Latin Grammies for Best Rock Album and Best Rock Song in 2005 (in 2007, they won another). Tweety’s resume is a long one.

On to the music! In the opening and title track, ‘No Me Digas Loco’ (‘Don’t Tell/Call Me Crazy’) the piano chord changes pull at the strings of the heart in a drama that’s deep, thoughtful and may be quite depressing for some. The times are changing and maybe I’m just hearing this music differently. There’s a longing here. And this sense of searching for something not quite obtainable continues on into the second track, ‘Lenta Columna’ (‘Slow Spine’) (the single streamable on Spotify). It isn’t until the third track, ‘Me Haces Susurrar’ (‘You Make Me Whisper’) do we get the quirky, bouncy side of this record.
